How Well Does the ERA5 Reanalysis Capture the Extreme Climate Events Over China? Part I: Extreme Precipitation

ERA5 is the fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis of European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, with high spatiotemporal resolution and global coverage. However, reliability simulating extreme precipitation events still unclear over China. In this study, 12 indices a comprehensive quantitative distance between simulation observation were used to evaluate from three fundamental aspects: intensity, frequency, duration. The geomorphological regionalization method was divide subregions results showed that ability simulate annual total better than daily precipitation. For intensity indices, performs well PRCPTOT (annual wet days precipitation) on RX5day (max 5-days amount) R95p (very days), especially in eastern China, RX1day 1-day R99p (extremely days). frequency increased as amount increased, except northwestern R50 mm (number heavy days) decreased. duration at drought Our highlight need enhance trend changes events.
